Protesters around the world rallied for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Saturday, calling for his release from prison and an end to government repression.
Navalny, 45, is Russia's most prominent opposition figure and has been a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin for years. He was poisoned with a nerve agent in August 2020 and arrested upon his return to Russia from Germany in January 2021. He is currently serving a 2.5-year sentence in a penal colony for embezzlement charges that he says are politically motivated.
On Saturday, protests were held in cities across Russia and around the world, including in London, Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C. Demonstrators waved Russian flags and chanted slogans calling for Navalny's release.
The protests come at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and the West. The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Russia in response to Navalny's imprisonment and other human rights abuses.
In a video message released on Saturday, Navalny called on his supporters to continue protesting. "We will not give up," he said. "We will not be silent. We will not be afraid."
It remains to be seen whether the protests will have any impact on Navalny's release. However, they have served to raise awareness of his case and to show that there is widespread support for his release
