In my opinion, the resolution passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan condemning the May 9 riots and expressing solidarity with the armed forces is a significant and necessary step in addressing the grave challenges faced by the country. The riots that occurred on May 9, 2023, were shocking and shameful, causing immense harm and loss of life. It is essential for the government and the people of Pakistan to unequivocally denounce such acts of violence and stand united in preserving national unity and integrity.

The resolution's emphasis on observing May 9 as a 'Black Day' signifies the gravity of the situation and the need to remember the events that unfolded on that day. The protests that ensued after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan led to widespread chaos, resulting in the loss of lives and extensive damage to public and private properties. It is imperative that those responsible for instigating and participating in the riots are held accountable under the existing laws of the country, including the Anti-terrorism Act 1997, Army Act 1952, and Pakistan Penal Code 1860. This will send a clear message that acts of violence and destruction will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, the resolution's call for the implementation of social media rules and regulations to counter propaganda against the country's institutions is commendable. In today's interconnected world, the misuse of social media platforms to spread false information and incite violence is a pressing concern. It is crucial to address this issue and ensure that strict measures are in place to prevent the dissemination of harmful content that aims to destabilize Pakistan.

I agree with the resolution's assertion that the resolution of political issues should be pursued through parliamentary and democratic means. Resorting to violence and attacking state institutions, public properties, and military installations is entirely unacceptable. It is vital to uphold the principles of democracy, national harmony, and respect for the rule of law.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif rightly highlighted that the attacks during the May 9 protests were not only on military installations but on the very fabric of Pakistan itself. It is our duty to defend and honor the sacrifices made by our armed forces in protecting our nation. Their commitment and dedication should be acknowledged, and any attempt to undermine their role and integrity must be strongly condemned.

The unanimous passage of the resolution by the National Assembly demonstrates the collective will of the country's lawmakers to address the challenges posed by the May 9 riots and reinforce the importance of national unity. The international community will closely observe the government's response to these incidents, and it is crucial for Pakistan to demonstrate its commitment to maintaining stability, upholding the rule of law, and combating extremism. Only through a united front and adherence to democratic values can Pakistan overcome these challenges and progress towards a more prosperous and peaceful future.
