In my opinion, Imran Khan, a former cricket star, has had a significant impact on Pakistani politics since founding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in 1996. The PTI, known for its populist ideology, emerged with promises of fighting corruption and improving the lives of ordinary Pakistanis. When Khan was elected prime minister in 2018, he quickly gained popularity due to his charismatic personality and his strong stance against corruption. However, his tenure was not without controversy.

While Khan received praise for his anti-corruption efforts and dedication, he faced criticism for his economic policies and management of the COVID-19 pandemic. These issues, coupled with political disagreements, led to his removal from power through a no-confidence motion in April 2022. Khan himself has accused the United States of being involved in a conspiracy to overthrow his government, and he has actively led peaceful protests against the new administration. Although some instances of violence have occurred during these protests, the majority have remained peaceful.

The future of Imran Khan in Pakistani politics remains uncertain. Despite being ousted, he remains determined to fight for the rights of the people and has expressed his ambition to regain power in the future. However, the challenges he currently faces make it unclear whether he can overcome them successfully.

Many Pakistanis perceive Khan as the last hope for their country, considering him a strong leader who can stand up against the military and the corrupt political establishment. They believe in his commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens. On the other hand, his critics argue that he is a populist leader more interested in retaining power than in good governance. They also highlight his poor economic record as evidence of his shortcomings.

It is too early to determine whether Khan will be able to fulfill his promise of bringing significant change to Pakistan. Nevertheless, he undeniably enjoys widespread support among the Pakistani population. Only time will reveal whether he can transform his popularity into a successful and enduring political career.

Here are some of Imran Khan's achievements during his time as prime minister of Pakistan:

  • Increased foreign investment: Khan's government was able to attract increased foreign investment, which helped to boost the Pakistani economy.
  • Reduced poverty: Khan's government was able to reduce poverty in Pakistan, by providing social assistance programs and by creating jobs.
  • Improved education: Khan's government was able to improve education in Pakistan, by increasing the number of schools and by providing scholarships to students.
  • Improved healthcare: Khan's government was able to improve healthcare in Pakistan, by building new hospitals and by providing free healthcare to the poor.
  • Increased access to clean water: Khan's government was able to increase access to clean water in Pakistan, by building new water pipelines and by providing water filters to households.
  • Reduced corruption: Khan's government was able to reduce corruption in Pakistan, by launching an anti-corruption campaign and by prosecuting corrupt officials.
  • Improved relations with neighboring countries: Khan's government was able to improve relations with neighboring countries, such as India and Afghanistan.
  • Launched the Ehsaas Program: The Ehsaas Program is a social welfare program that provides financial assistance to the poor and vulnerable in Pakistan.
  • Constructed the Kartarpur Corridor: The Kartarpur Corridor is a visa-free corridor that connects Pakistan with the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, India. The corridor was built to facilitate pilgrimages by Sikh pilgrims from India to the Gurdwara.
  • Launched the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Project: The Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Project is a reforestation project that aims to plant 10 billion trees in Pakistan. The project is expected to help to improve the environment and to mitigate the effects of climate change.

These are just some of the achievements of Imran Khan during his time as prime minister of Pakistan. Khan is a controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he made some significant contributions to the country.

The Current Situation

The current political situation in Pakistan is characterized by high polarization. Shehbaz Sharif, the brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, leads the current government as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), one of the two major political parties in the country. The other significant party is the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

This political polarization presents a substantial challenge for Pakistan. It hampers economic growth and obstructs efforts to address pressing issues such as terrorism and climate change. The government faces a complex array of difficult choices, and it remains unclear how it will navigate these ongoing crises.

The future of Pakistan itself is shrouded in uncertainty. The country confronts numerous serious challenges, including political instability, an ailing economy, terrorism, and climate change. The government must make difficult decisions in order to tackle these issues effectively. The successful resolution of these challenges could enable Pakistan to realize its potential as a prosperous and stable nation.

Two Parties

An unexpected development in Pakistani politics is the alliance between the PML-N and the PPP, two parties that historically engaged in rivalry. The alliance emerged as a response to their shared opposition to Imran Khan's government. Accusing Khan of corruption, incompetence, and mismanagement, the PML-N and the PPP have pledged to collaborate in forming a new government committed to good governance, economic development, and national security.

This alliance between the PML-N and the PPP carries significance for Pakistani politics. It marks the first instance in many years where these two major parties have joined forces on a significant issue. Consequently, it is expected to have a considerable impact on upcoming elections in Pakistan.

It is worth noting that the PML-N and the PPP do not naturally align due to differing ideologies and constituencies. However, they have set aside their differences to oppose Khan's government, indicating a willingness to work together towards common goals.

While some view the alliance as a positive development that showcases the parties' commitment to Pakistan's betterment, others perceive it as a betrayal. Critics argue that the alliance primarily serves the self-interest of the PML-N and the PPP, as both parties have a history of corruption. Concerns have been raised regarding potential instability arising from the alliance, including conflicts between their respective supporters, which could further destabilize the country and hinder efforts to address existing challenges.

Moreover, the alliance could potentially weaken Pakistan's democracy. As both the PML-N and the PPP are dynastic parties, their alliance might consolidate power within a few influential families. This concentration of power could undermine the democratic process and limit the ability of the people to hold their leaders accountable.

Some people believe that JUI is a puppet of the PPP and the PML-N. They argue that the party is only interested in power and that it is willing to compromise its principles in order to achieve its goals. Others argue that JUI is a genuine political party that is committed to serving the people of Pakistan. They argue that the party has a long history of fighting for the rights of the poor and the oppressed.

The future of Pakistan remains uncertain. The country faces numerous challenges, including terrorism, poverty, and economic instability. The alliance between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is not a positive development for the country. It is a sign that the two major political parties are more interested in power than in good governance. The alliance could lead to instability and weaken democracy in the country. The people of Pakistan deserve better. They deserve leaders who are committed to good governance and who will work to improve their lives.
