Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi clarified on Sunday that no decision has been made regarding the house arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan. Naqvi made these statements during a press conference in Lahore, addressing reports suggesting that authorities were considering declaring Khan's residence in Zaman Park a sub-jail and placing him under house arrest.
The PTI has been facing significant pressure from the government since enraged party workers attacked military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commanders House and the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, following Khan's arrest on May 9. The army referred to that day as a "Black Day."
Among those arrested in connection with the May 9 violence are thousands of workers, including women. The PTI claims that its female supporters have faced mistreatment while in custody.
During his address, Imran Khan called on the judiciary to intervene and address the alleged mistreatment of his female workers, urging the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the matter.
However, Chief Minister Naqvi refuted these claims, stating that women have been treated in accordance with the law and accusing the PTI of propagating false information about mistreatment in prisons.
Naqvi mentioned that 32 women were initially arrested, and only 11 of them remain in jail. He emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to ensure the safety of "mothers and sisters."
Regarding the events of May 9, the chief minister described them as unprecedented, and he affirmed that the government will not show any restraint, regardless of the influence of the suspected attackers of Jinnah House.
In response to a question, Chief Minister Naqvi confirmed that PTI supporter Khadija Shah is in police custody and an identity parade will be conducted. This question arose following the circulation of a viral video on social media in which Shah apologized for her "actions" on May 9.
Additional details about the situation include Imran Khan's arrest on May 9 on corruption and money laundering charges. The PTI has accused the government of using the police to target its supporters, while the government denies the allegations and asserts that it is taking action only against those who have violated the law. The situation remains tense, and the future course of events remains uncertain.
