Bluesky, a decentralized social networking app backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is gaining traction as a potential rival to Twitter and Elon Musk's Twitter alternative.
The app has no single owner or leader, making it less susceptible to censorship and data collection. In April, Bluesky saw a 606% increase in mobile downloads, reaching a total of 628,000 downloads on both Android and iOS. However, the app currently has only 50,000 users and it is unclear how it will generate revenue.
Bluesky was incubated within Twitter in 2019 and runs on the AT Protocol, a decentralized networking technology. The app's advocates say that it is less likely to collect and sell user data, but its main drawback is a clunky user experience. Dorsey's backing of Bluesky demonstrates his desire to disrupt what he helped create and move towards decentralized platforms for self-governance. Other decentralized social projects that have been gaining attention include Mastodon, Lens, and Farcaster, which do not sell ads or collect user data.
